Dear Stallion Families,

After a special meeting with our school board on Wednesday evening, July 15th, there are new developments we would like to share regarding the upcoming school year.  Please know that the health and safety of our students and staff are our top priority in making these decisions. We realize these changes can create different challenges for families. Thank you for your support and patience through this unique time in education.

Calendar:  In order to accommodate the need for additional campus and online learning platform preparations, BLA’s start date has been adjusted to August 17th for all students. This will allow us to be more proactive in the planning and preparation processes for teaching and learning, purposeful planning for remote learning, and training/practicing cleaning protocols.  These adjustments will result in remote and online opportunities that are significantly different than the Crisis Learning experienced in the spring.

Key Dates: 

  • July 27- August 12: Pre Service, teacher and staff training (No students)

  • August 12th: Round Up at BLPA 8:00-12:00

  • August 13th and 14th: Elementary Round Up / Assessment Days (by appointment)

  • August 14th Kindergarten, 6th grade, 9th grade Orientation day

  • Kindergarten 8:00am- 11:30am

  • 6th & 9th : 7:45am- 11:30am

  • August 17th: All students return to school, online only students start on AMP.

Round Up:

  • Elementary: All necessary forms and payments will be available online for parents.  Additionally, families are able to pay fees (if they choose not to pay them online), pick up planners, and turn in health paperwork and medications in person at round up. We will combine the assessment days and Round Up to take place on August 13th and 14th.  Parents will schedule a time for individual students to meet their teacher and participate in individual assessments. We would like both online and on campus students to participate and will work with individual families that are not able to come to campus for assessments.  At this time families will be able to meet with PTO, Boy Scouts, purchase spirit wear, drop off school supplies, pay fees etc. Specific information about Round Up and signing up for assessment times will be sent out in the coming weeks
  • Secondary: 6-12 Grade: All necessary forms and payments will be available online for parents. Round Up is an opportunity for families and students to meet our organizations: School Board, PTO, School Accountability Committee, Military Family Life Counselor, fall sports, Champions before and after school care, lunch services, and transportation. Additionally, families are able to pay fees (if they choose not to pay them online), pick up planners, request a locker, complete student parking forms, turn in health paperwork and medications, and confirm enrollment in Schoology, PowerSchool, and pay schools. Specific information about Round Up and signing up for assessment times will sent out in the coming weeks

Online Platform/Remote Learning: 

For the purposes of providing students with comprehensive education, BLA will divide students into two major groups for the First semester: 1. Online Only Students and 2. In-Person students.

  • Online Only BLA Students: Students will participate on a platform called AMP provided by Accel Schools via the learning management system Canvas. This platform is comprehensive and has remote teachers that are certified in content areas of expertise, trained in online/blended learning models, and are dedicated full time to online only students. Parents please be aware that this online only platform will look very different from March and will require more dedicated engagement throughout the day The online school day will be structured for full day academic engagement with a mix of synchronous learning and independent time.  Attendance and grading will reflect students’ participation, effort, and achievement in their online learning classes. Please see the link below for specific information.  We are reopening the online only registration for parents that would like to choose this option.  Please click this link to register by 7/20/2020. BLA is asking families to commit to a model for the first semester. If there are extenuating circumstances that results in a family desiring to change models, they will be handled on a case by case basis.   • In-Person/ Remote BLA Students: Students who intend to be onsite will be participating in learning in the traditional format.  In the event that a student has to switch to remote learning or we are mandated to transition to remote learning, this will take place via Schoology. This format will be taught by BLA teachers.  Parents please be aware that this remote learning will look very different from March.  The remote learning school day will be structured for full day academic engagement with a mix of synchronous learning and independent time.  Attendance and grading will reflect students’ participation, effort, and achievement in their remote learning classes. Face Coverings: In consideration of providing a safe environment for all families, students, faculty and staff,  BLA will adopt District 49’s policy in regards to face coverings. Key Points from D-49’s Policy: In August, D-49 will return to in-person work and learning, interacting directly with colleagues and students on a regular basis. One of our priorities is providing a safe environment for everyone districtwide. With the resurgence of COVID-19 outbreaks, many experts, including our county agencies and hospitals are amplifying the Centers for Disease Control guidance that wearing masks is an essential practice to minimize the spread of COVID-19. New guidance from El Paso County Public Health reinforces this for our region, stating “all staff and students are encouraged to wear masks to the greatest extent possible while in proximity to other people.”

  • Students, grades 1- 12 are required to wear masks as a condition to participate in in-person instruction beginning in August. In almost all cases where students are unable or choose not to mask, we will provide school-based E-learning options.

  • In the very limited number of cases where our obligation to an individual student requires in-person learning without a mask, we will depend on individualized learning plans or an exemption process to provide consistent, equitable accommodations.

  • For staff-staff or staff-parent interactions, we will make use of virtual meetings as much as possible to manage visits or conferences, and will require any in-person guests and visitors to wear a mask.
